W.E.B. Du Bois, Excerpt from The Souls of Black Folks: of Booker T Washington and Others

  1. The story of The Souls of Black Folk with the title Of Mr. Booker T. Washington and Others is a negative response. It shows his rejection of Washington policies and his approach in the civil rights movement. In this story, Du Bois was severely criticized Washington for his old attitude of adjustment and submission to Washington. In order words, it is a shame for Washington that has attitude of submission towards the white people who treat their dogs with dignity than African Americans.
On Du Bois opinion, Washington was deliberately asked the black people to avoid rocking the racial boat. Du Bois calls instead for political power, insists on civil rights, and the higher education of Negro youth. Du Bois was right at the first place. As human beings, African Americans were created with the Creator who created the Europeans, Asia, Arabs, and Indian people. The Great Creator creates all human beings equally. Therefore, African Americans have the right to access to equal education. Someone may say for Du Bois, in order for black people to achieve their integrity, it is to acquire equal education, civil and political rights rather than economic rights.
