Kate Chopin, The Storm

  1. I thought it was fishy how Alcee seemed to ride to her house right when the storm was starting rather than just ride home. Her house must have been really low to the ground. I’m so used to high porches these days, that I thought it was strange she had to put something underneath the door to stop the rain from coming in. To me it seemed a little too easy for Alcee to get her into bed. I didn’t understand how she remained unfaithful, yet smiled and laughed at he rode away. If I were to be unfaithful I would be torn into confession. They just make it seem like unfaithfulness is okay as long as you don’t get caught. The ending portrayed everyone to be happy. So every time there is a storm and you are not with your significant other it is okay to cheat? I am used to passionate stories like this one, but I don’t understand how one could be so passionate about a fling and laugh with her husband and child through dinner like guilt isn’t eating her alive.

  2. From the beginning Calixta’s Husband Bobinot was described as a good guy that liked fairness. Calixta in the other hand was described as this woman that did not feel any uneasiness about her husband and child being under the storm. Calixta is one of those many easy women in this world that make the rest of us look bad by their actions. She instantly saw Alcee and decided the desire for him was stronger than her will to be faithful? Talk about a women with no ethics whatsoever. The fact that she disrespected her husband by sleeping with the Alcee in his house and on his bed that is just not acceptable. Call me old school but the fact that many people including the author at that point and time and even now were content with the outcome of the story is just repugnant to me. Maybe the reason why I have such strong feeling about this story is because I have ethics and believe in people being faithful to one another. Also when Calixta had the audacity to kiss Bobinot right after sleeping with Alcee is just plain gross. Honestly I feel like if she was not happy with her marriage why didn’t she leave him? Why stay with him and make him look like a fool? Why didn’t she just run away with Alcee if like said in the story she was in lust with him? I hated that the real storm was them two sleeping together and not what everyone thought. The real slap in the face ifs the fact that she “composed herself” so that her husband and child wouldn’t find out and then acted like nothing happened. Calixta is painted in my eyes as a very promiscuous woman that had no shame and did not love her family.
