Ernest Hemmingway, A Clean, Well-Lighted Place

  1. I thought this story was interesting, because it was very different. I did not like the dialogue, and found it to be a bit confusing knowing who the speaker was. I liked how certain words were fused together, and when I read it, it helped give a rhythm. The way the story completes a circle gave the ending a nice conclusion, but it felt a bit anti-climatic. Overall, the story felt a bit dragged out. The part that digressed with "nada" and "nothing" was unique and I enjoyed it, although I didn't completely understand its significance.

  2. This story made sense to me at some points but also was very confusing. It was also very hard to distinguish who was talking at different times because it was not always mentioned. I thought it was interested how some of the story was using a different language and switching off. Overall I enjoyed this story but didnt think it really had much of a point or a plot.

  3. I didn't enjoy this next story as much as I did the first. I didn't follow most of the dialog between the two waiters and had to go back several times and re-read it as to make sure I was attributing the correct sentence to the correct waiter. Though I didn't like how the story was written, I did really enjoy the character of the older waiter.
When the young waiter says their customer is old and dirty, the old waiter defends the old man and points out how neat and clean he drinks from his cup. The older waiter also argues for the younger waiter to give the customer another brandy before shutting down the cafe. Though he loses the argument in the end, and the old man is cast out on the street the older waiter makes a point to tell his young co-worker there are some people out there who may need this clean cafe, who may have no home to go to. I think the older waiter is a very compassionate person and understands the old mans troubles because he himself finds he would rather be out drinking brandy than in his own home. The common plight of the two older men and the kindness the older waiter tries to show his customer is very heartwarming and a reminder there are some good people out there still.

  4. I wasn't a huge fan of this story but I still can respect the way it was written, story line, etc. The one downside to this story was it did come off a bit confusing at times and I couldn't get a clear grip on who was speaking. The dialogue was little unclear, but I enjoyed some aspects of the work of writing. Although it was confusing to me, I'm sure at the time period it was written people found it much easier to comprehend and much more enjoyable than young adults today.

  5. Not a big of fan of this story seeing as how it was kind of hard to follow near the end. I understood the beginning where the two waiters were ripping on this old man. I working in retail a similar customer, a old woman, who shops in the store till we have to kick her out. I can understand there anger at him, but at the sometime I still know its wrong for what they are saying. The elderly should be treated with respect and telling this man he should have died last week is a horrible thing.

  6. This definitely was not one of my favorite stories to read. It was a little difficult to follow the dialogue between the two waiters. I also didn't like the waiters and the mean comments they kept saying about the lonely, deaf, old man. I also disliked when one of the waiters made a comment about how the old man couldn't be in despair because he "has plenty of money". This really shows what kind of man that waiter is.

  7. I did not enjoy this story, it was definitely not a an easy read. I had a hard time following the dialogue, it was very confusing and patchy. The characters in the story were very mean to the old man at the restaurant. I didn't really understand the lesson there was supposed to be in this story either.

  8. This story was my least favorite of the two assigned to read. Although I enjoyed Wolff's short story, I found it a tad bit slow. However, this story was even worse. It seemed to sort of just drag on and for me, that slow pace never really picked up. I think the writer did a decent job at developing the characters though. I work in a restaurant so I can relate to the waiters frustration with the old man keeping the cafe open later than anyone wants to stay and serve him. However, I could never relate to saying such mean things about a little old man. It was just sort of cruel. By the end of the story, I got the idea that these characters are just bitter and not very nice people. Another thing that stood out to me in the story was the dialogue. I love dialogue in a story; I love to read it and I love to write it. I feel that dialogue makes everything more real, more interesting, and more effective and pulling the reader in. In this case, I found the dialogue hard to follow the more I got into the story. It eventually becomes very difficult to distinguish which waiter is talking or if the old man is now talking. The confusion only took away from the story itself, which was already struggling to interest me. Then again, it's not the worst thing I've ever read.

  9. I loved this story. The writing had a sort of ambiguous depth that I don't often see. The style and word choice was refreshing, and I would like to read more work like this. The only thing that slowed me down with this piece was the change in language. I'm still glad the Spanish dialogue was there though, as an added dynamic it was valuable.

  10. I did not enjoy this read. I felt that the way it was written made it a little more difficult to follow. I thought the pace of the story was very slow and at some parts in the dialogue it became difficult to understand which person was talking. I didn't really understand the message that was being sent in this reading. It really just showed how cruel the waiters were to the old man in the story.

  11. I enjoyed reading this story. I found it also slowed me down when the Spanish Dialogue came into play. I also enjoyed reading the dialogue because it was short and to the point just as if the two waiters where actually speaking to one another in the cafe setting.

  12. I liked this story a lot. It did get a bit confusing at certain parts with the dialogue and figuring out who was speaking. I think the lesson of this story was that in our youth (the young waiter) we do not appreciate the little things, and take to much for granted. All that old man wanted to do was sit in the shadows of a well lit cafe and drink his brandy. The older waiter understands what it is like to be lonely, and realizes how peaceful and relaxing it is in the silence of the night.

  13. This story was not a bad read. I found it a bit slow and difficult to accurately follow through the first time reading it. I obviously didn't like the verbal harassment and troubles that the two waiters gave the elderly man for having an interest in their place of work. I didn't like this story because being rude to the elderly will never help any situation and believe in karma.
