Edgar Lee Masters, Lucinda Matlock

  1. I found this poem to be very sweet and powerful because I found out that the protagonist, Lucinda Matlock, lived a very long life full of many hardships, like the death of eight of her twelve children and devoted her entire life to her family and she still came out strong and happy.

I especially loved the ending when she says, "What is this I hear of sorrow and weariness, /Anger, discontent and drooping hopes? /Degenerate sons and daughters, /Life is too strong for you- /It takes life to love Life." It's such an inspirational quote that gives me strength whenever I feel weak. I feel like anyone can learn something from this poem, regardless of its accuracy as far as exaggeration because everyone should always be strong, no matter the circumstances, and we will always have to keep going, so there's no point in feeling sorry for ourselves.
