Ernest Hemmingway, Hills Like White Elephants

  1. I didn't find the setting of the story or the fact that a couple was discussing an operation had any connection. I mean, if it was somebody's personal story, it would make more sense but since it's fiction, I just don't get it.

I also didn't understand how the first thing somebody can think of when he/she sees some white hills is a group of white elephants. Really? How about, dunes of sand, how about humongous donuts? But elephants? Makes no sense.

Anyway, the story line is blah. Nothing really stands out but the fact that the girl is undecided about getting the so called "operation" and they never mention what kind of operation it is. Also, I remember beers, and Spain, and a girl who only speaks Spanish say a few words...pretty much it's not a powerful story, not even great. Maybe just average. But at least it was easy to read.

  2. Ernest Hemingway’s “Hills Like White Elephants” was trying for me. What operation were they arguing about? I can only assume a boob job. What other operation would a guy want a woman to have so bad? I didn’t like how Hemingway left that as a question. Why would he make them argue so much and then leave you hanging with no clues? And why were they going to Madrid for the operation? Or why were they discussing it on vacation?
