Emma Lazarus, The New Colossus

  1. A reader might say that the poem is one of the fantastic written works of 19th Century in American literature. The poem can be considered as an expression of America's self-image and a welcoming nation of immigrants. In this poem, Lazarus symbolized the Statue of Liberty as a beacon of hope for immigrants who seek a better life in America. She stated, "Give me your tired, your poor," It is like Jesus who invites all people who are weary and burdened, and He will give them rest (Matthew 11v 28, KJV, King, James). In this poem, Lazarus shows how the United Stated of America welcomes immigrants from all over the places, such as Irish, Haitian, as a Good Samaritan. It opens its arms of compassion for those that have been victims of other nation’s abuse.
