Stephen Crane, An Episode of War

It was very hard to understand the beginning. So much was going on and quickly moved on. But just like war in real life many things are unexpected and can quickly happen. It was hard for me to picture what was going on. At the end of the very short story the lieutenant figures out the his arm has to be amputated. I would go crazy if I found out I had to get any of my limbs amputated. I guess the infection was too bad and too risky for the lieutenant to keep his arm. Which brings up a question. At the end of the story it does not really make clear if the doctor forced the lieutenant to surrender his arm. Maybe eventually the lieutenant realized his infection was seriously bad and that he rather live than take a chance. It would be hard to come back to your normal life after a war and have an arm missing. The missing arm would be a constant reminder of what you went through and what you lost at the war.
