O. Henry, The Cop and the Anthem

  1. This story is really good story. the way the Author helps me as the reader visualize and feel what the homeless man is feeling is amazing. I did not like how the story enderd but I loved the fact that the Author made me feel the depression and frustration the homeless guy felt. The guy started sleeping in the park hungry and cold. He talked about not having family and wanting to be in jail where he would be warm and fed rather than sleeping on a bench in the middle of the winter and starving. For me a person must be really miserable to do everything he did in order to go to jail and apparently he was of bad luck too.. poor guy, I feel for him because the way I see it is that he is not from this country and came to here for the American dream leaving his family behind because there's a point when he says he would like to be back in his country. Anyways at first I thought that he couldn't even get arrested when he clearly tryed and then when he decided to make something out of himself and by not doing anything wrong he gets arrested. This to me is a clear that things do not always happen when you want then but rather when God decides they will. I think that is what The Cop and the Anthem means. Now that I think about it it was not bad luck God saw him struggling and sent the cop to save him from the suffering..

  2. It’s a little annoying how the man FINALLY decides to do right and do something good for himself and it all turns around and backfires at the last possible moment. Yes, he was getting what he initially wanted, but after he had already changed his mind and found there was an easier way out. He said evil had possessed over him, but what kind of evil? Why did the evil posses over him? Why did the evil stop now and not before? I just feel this story left so many things unanswered.

  3. This story was good but sad at the same time. The main character was a homeless man and at first I did not understand why he wanted the police to catch him. Then I realized that he wanted to be arrested so he could be in jail and stay warm for the winter, rather than out on his bench during a cold winter. I found it ironic that he did numerous things to try and get caught by the police and in the end he went to jail for doing nothing. In a way this story was also frustrating because every time he wished for a reaction the outcome was always opposite of what he wanted. It was frustrating to him and also frustrating to read. I felt sympathy for this man. It also made me feel sympathy for all the homeless people that do have to survive in the winter, it must be a hard time if a man in the story went through so much trouble to find his way into jail, rather than outside for the winter. Most people try and stay out of jail but in extreme circumstances, like the main character of this story, jail seems better than what he had. And to me that is sad.

  4. I thought this story was good. Very unusual and pretty sad but a little funny at the end. Soapy tries so hard to get thrown in jail for the fear of the incoming winter. I understand why he would want to spend his winter in jail rather than on the streets out in the cold with no food. Soapy seems like a good person and he tries his best to act like a crook. But he fails in all his mischievous acts. I felt bad for the fact that he had a chance to start something but instead he gets arrested for the stupidest reason. He tried so hard to get thrown in jail but when he finally gives up and gets cuffed for basically doing nothing.

  5. This story was cute. It had a nice message and it was very funny. I felt some sympathy for Soapy only at the end because he had decided to change and then, all of a sudden, his fate is sealed...poor guy.

At first, though, I wasn't really on his side because he was only doing bad things in order to take advantage of even more people and I dislike selfishness. Then, as his plans started failing one after another, I felt a little bad but I was glad that they failed because that way he could learn that what he was doing was wrong and in the end when he gets arrested after having a positive vision, it's basically God punishing him for being so selfish but not really being cruel because that's what he wanted all along so it makes it really funny.
