Tobias Wolff, Mortals

  1. Mortals’ was an interesting story. I didn’t like how the writer lost his job due to someone else’s own personal practical joke. If Mr. Givens hadn’t gone to the paper the writer would have his job. Mr. Givens should have told his wife the truth. The tone was morbid because of the topic of the story. Anytime you read about death it is sad. It struck me funny how sick and twisted the man Mr. Givens had to be to ask the writer to lunch after he had caused him to lose his job. The worst part was Mr. Givens didn’t come clean at the paper to save the writers job.

  2. I think this story captures a thought most people have had: will they be remembered? I've wondered what Mr. Givens has, what would my obituary say? Would it be distinctive or forgettable? I think it took a lot of guts to do what Mr. Givens did, and I commend him for answering a question we all wonder. However, it's also sad that the writer lost his job over it. There is no right answer to the story because if the writer checked the facts, Mr. Givens would never know what the obituary looked like.

  3. I think Mortals really gives out an important message that many people wonder, if they will be remembered after there dead and what they'll be remembered for. I think that what Mr. Givens did was clever in a sense to see what people would think and do if he really was dead but it wasnt fair for the writer to lose his job over him trying to find the answer. Atleast Mr. Givens tried to make up for his mistake and take the writer out to lunch but in the end the writer still lost his job and Mr. Givens had a smart idea that ended up backfiring right in front of him.

  4. I really enjoyed "Mortals". What Mr. Givens did was what most of us wish we could do. Wolff says "He had dreamed up a way of going to his own funeral". I think that sentence really captures the whole essence of the short story. So many of us wish we knew if we would be remember when we are gone. And if we are indeed remembered, will it be fondly?
As my other classmates have mentioned, it was sad to see the author lose his job over an old mans prank, but is a small part of the story compared to greater message I think the author is trying to send.

  5. I enjoyed reading Mortals. It has a very strong message and I definitely got a lot out of it. I respect Mr. Givens for doing what he did, because some of us don't have the courage to do that. Of course, all of us at one point or another have thought about what it would be like if we were gone or how we will be remembered, but not too many people would take it to the level that Mr. Givens did.

  6. Mortals was an interesting story with a hard question, will I be remembered after I die? That is actually one of the many questions I ask myself. As a production major I want believe behind something amazing for people to enjoy for generations. Mr. Givens did the one thing everyone is thinking about doing, and I give him respect for it. That is the type of person I hope I can be one day.

  7. Mortals was a good story with a strong message. What will people remember about me when I move on. Almost everyone has thought about what it will be like when they pass away and what will be said about them. Mr. Givens had a certain type of courage to try and see what people really thought of him and to me, that is quite impressive to actually go through with it.

  8. I enjoyed this story, i felt it had a great message. I respected what he did it took a lot of courage, there are not many people who would have the courage to do that. He really got me thinking about if I would be courageous enough to do the same if the situation ever happened to me.

  9. I really enjoyed reading this story. Because of the ending it really made me think about what my life would be like if I were to die. I liked the mystery of who called in the death notice. I would like to know what it would be like after I die, but I would never want to go to the extreme to find out like Mr. Givens did.

  10. I thought that the story in general was OK. It didn't seem to grab my attention as much as I had hoped it to, however, I can definitely agree that the message here is strong. Though I found the story to read somewhat slowly, I found myself entertained as I read a story that was relatable. I think that everyone wonders what will happen to them after they're gone from the world; I know I do. I think about things like, who will come to my funeral or what will people say about me once I'm no longer around to truly hear it. Mr. Givens found a way to live through his experience of death by sending in his own eulogy - an act that definitely takes a lot of guts, and maybe even a little insanity! Though it was a gutsy move, it was also a selfish move, as the writer lost his job because of it. In class we discussed conflict in stories. Without the writer's termination from his job, this story would just be something kind of boring to read. However, with the conflict created by Mr. Given's actions, the reader is able to learn a valuable lesson - that bold moves sometimes, if not always, have consequences.

  11. After reading this story I believe the the story had a great twist at the end, when we come to find out that Mr. Givens was the one who actually called in the fake obituary. Also this story seemed to have a good lesson sewed within the story. I believe that the lesson or even the question asked is what will you be remember for after you pass away? Some what saying live your life to the fullest extent.

  12. everyone at some point in their life has wondered if they will be missed when they die, How will you be remembered? This story embraced that idea, and givens wanted to find out for himself. What givens did faking his own death was a very courageous move. I feel a little sorry for the reporter losing his job, and understand why he didn't like to bother the families of the deceased to confirm the death of their loved ones. But had he done his job properly in the first place he wouldn't have lost it.

  13. I thoroughly enjoyed this piece of reading. Like other classmates, I felt that this sent a very strong message to its readers. I think about death and what would happen after I died. I think about what people would say and if people would really truly care. I also think about who and how many people would be at my funeral. What will I be remembered for? I have a lot of respect for Mr. Givens and hope to be as good a man as he was someday.

  14. The message in this story was clear and easy to relate to. The theme of being remembered or forgotten after death is powerful, and that's what makes it such a strong piece of writing. It is difficult for me to think of something I didn't like about this story. I think over all it was a well written and thought out work.

  15. This was the better of the two short stories assigned. This really can hit home to almost any reader that has a lost a loved one. Like Conrad said in the last post, "the theme of being remembered or forgotten after death is powerful." Overall this is a sad story but makes you think about the real issues in life and inspires the readers to be the best person in life you can be.
