Jimmy Santiago Baca, So Mexicans Are Taking Jobs from Americans

  1. I love this poem. From beginning to end. I love all the things he says, especially the beginning. I find it hilarious and so true at the same time. As far as the poem goes as a whole, I think Jimmy Santiago Baca made a very good point that Mexicans, or anyone for that matter, isn’t taking any jobs from Americans. All that they’re doing is trying to feed their families, their children, just like everybody else. I think that the reason why they pick on Mexicans so much in particular is because of the way they look and the language that they speak. When an European immigrant comes to America and gets a job, nobody ever says anything. Why? Because of the color of their skin; because the language that they speak is not Spanish.
I think it’s crazy how the entire United States always sees Mexican people as the enemy when they’re really nothing different from the rest of the world. It’s a matter of discrimination. What Mexicans and people from the rest of Latin America are facing nowadays is the same thing that black people had to endure for many centuries and it’s a big shame because we should all be trying to prevent this from happening again, considering how much we know about the pain that black people went through for so many years. Basically, if Americans don’t stop doing this to Mexicans and the rest of Latin Americans, the segregation of “colored people” of the early to mid 1900’s will only happen again but with a different group of people.
